Project Objectives

The overall objective of DOTCOM Waste is to increase the capabilities of law enforcement agencies (LEAs), customs and port authorities, environmental agencies, and prosecutors to fight cross-border waste crime more cost effectively.

In particular, the project seeks to:

  • Deepen the understanding of current waste crime trends;
  • Identify and share good practices for detecting, investigating and prosecuting waste crime activities;
  • Promote international collaboration among stakeholders involved in the fight against waste crimes through the design and implementation of new mechanisms for information exchange, technology transfer and coordination;
  • Facilitate information exchange, promote networking and build trust among the different stakeholders, especially between national government agencies and international organisations such as INTERPOL and World Customs Organisation;
  • Support operational law enforcement activities by developing an operational and organisational toolkit that would enable law enforcement agencies to respond faster and more effectively to illegal waste management and trade activities; and
  • Create and run training sessions for the “response chain” – LEAs, environmental agencies, customs and port authorities, and prosecution offices – in identifying, investigating and prosecuting illegal waste management and trade.
